There are several different types of hanging file hardware that can be installed in your desk cabinet drawer. To install them is not really a difficult task. There are a few things that you need to research first before purchasing anything.

Checking The Width of Your Drawers

Letter file folders are eleven and three quarters (11-3/4") inches wide. Legal file folders are fourteen and three quarters (14-3/4") inches wide. These are the two dimensions you will have to work with for the inside clearance of your drawers. The overall size at the top of the hanging Pendaflex file is larger. This is where the bars extend through the folder.

What Are Your Drawer Heights

The inside clearance will need to be at least nine inches (9"). You will also need to have clearance for the bars that get attached to the tops of the drawer sides. An allowance for the labels is necessary as well. All-in-all, you will need about ten and a half inches in order for the file systems to work properly. This allows enough room for the label to extend past the cabinet supports of the other drawers when opening and closing the drawers.

What is The Thickness of Your Drawer Sides

One thing you will need to take into account is the thickness of your drawer sides. The slip over type of bars are generally made to work with half inch thick sides.

Types of File Drawer Rails

There are several different kinds of bars that can be used. Some of them get permanently screwed into the sides of the drawers. Other styles may just slip over the edges of the drawers. There are also the kind that you assemble and they set on the bottom of your cabinet drawer.

Installing Permanent File Drawer Folder Support Bars

Basically all you should need to do this with is an electric drill and a screwdriver. The drill will be for drilling a pilot hole for the screw to go into. All you will need to do is install two brackets by using four screws.
